A Unique Educational/Support Group for Patients and their Family Members
The introduction of implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) led to a revolution in the treatment of people with potentially life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias. Research and clinical experience demonstrate that ICDs save lives and have a positive effect on quality of life; however, people with ICD and their loved ones must cope with the challenges of recovering from and adjusting to life after ICD implantation.
Providence Alaska Medical Center is sensitive to these challenges and has established an ICD education/support group that meets twice a year. Facilitated by a Registered Nurse, the ICD Education/Support Group creates an environment that offers moral support and problem solving, as well as education and information sharing. Lectures provided by a team of Providence professionals such as an exercise physiologist, dietitian, pharmacist, and social worker include information on the
following topics:
— Exercise and Heart Disease
— Heart Smart Eating
— Cardiac Medications
— Psycho-Social issues
— Spiritual Concerns
— Travel to Your ICD
