Julia's Story

The Children's Hospital at Providence treats over 30,000 children on average each year, children just like Julia Gebert. Julia was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor when she was 3 months old after her parents noticed one of her eyes was slightly bulging.

Her initial treatments took place in California because there was no Pediatric Oncologist in Alaska until 1999. Julia's parents were relieved when they learned they could bring Julia home to Alaska for treatment. For the first 4 years of her life, Julia was treated with many regimens of chemotherapy, surgeries and other care from many specialists. She has been under the care of Providence physicians for 7 years. She began her third chemotherapy protocol just before her third birthday, since that time the tumor stabilized and has remained mostly unchanged.

Since she was a 3 month-old baby, Julia has shown strength and determination to be healthy and have fun. Although she is blind in both eyes as a result of the brain tumor, she does not let it slow her down. Her first love is music. She plays the violin and piano with perfect pitch. Despite her challenges, she enjoys spending time outdoors in Alaska, camping, fishing, sitting around the campfire telling stories and singing songs, and cross country skiing. She's admirably optimistic, adventurous, and confident. Local treatment would not be an option without donations to The Children's Hospital.

Thank you for helping Julia and the many children served at The Children's Hospital at Providence.
