Providence Horizon House becomes an
Eden-certified home

ANCHORAGE, AK – During a conference call with the Eden home office on Mar. 24, 2009, Providence Horizon House was officially recognized as a registered Eden home. Membership in the Eden registry is a sort of honor roll used to recognize homes that have committed themselves to the Eden Alternative, creating a place where elders can thrive and enjoy abundant life.

“Recognition as an Eden-certified home is a testament to the care and compassion of our staff and an affirmation of our commitment to ensuring that our residents enjoy the fullness of life,” said Horizon House director Jamie Benard. “We are honored to be on this list of outstanding homes.”

The Eden Alternative® is a philosophy of caring that was founded by Dr. William Thomas almost 20 years ago. As a physician, Dr. Thomas identified three plagues that account for the bulk of suffering among elders: loneliness, helplessness and boredom. The Eden Alternative philosophy urges those who care for elders to create vibrant homes where daily life revolves around real life, relationships and true caring. The Eden philosophy is based on a core belief that aging should be a continued stage of development and growth, rather than a period of decline.

Eden registered homes agree to abide by the Eden principles and receive a plaque to display in the facility. In becoming an Eden-certified facility, Providence Horizon House reviewed policies to ensure that they honored elders, putting elders and families in control of their lives. Staff also developed a new orientation program to emphasize this way of caring, emphasizing the need to expand the world that elders live in rather than to accept decline in quality of life and relationships.

“Our elders deserve the highest quality of life in their later years,” said Benard. “Putting into practice the Eden principles ensures that the focus of our work is to enrich the quality of life of those we serve.”
