Providence Facilities Support Department was recently acknowledged for three "best practices" for hospitals projects in the American Society for Healthcare Engineering publication in the March-April 2005 issue. The first best practice is the documented cradle to grave process for hazardous materials in the medical center, created by Frances Jones. The Hazardous Materials and Waste Management Committee reviews it annually with departments ensuring it accurately reflects the current processes. The second best practice is the Hazardous Materials and Waste Management Committee conducting a Failure Mode Effects Analysis on the documented process to identify potential failures and put controls in place to minimize or eliminate failures from occurring. The analysis identified areas for improvement and is monitored continuously by the Environment of Care Committee. The final best practice is the working relationship that Providence has developed with our local fire department. Providence invites the fire department for a tour on an annual basis to identify critical areas for emergency response. Providence has also developed critical maps that will aid in the rapid response we receive from the fire department.
