Physicians and staff associated with the Adult Acute Care Unit at Providence Alaska Honored with 2005 Excellence Award Providence Alaska Medical Center received a 2005 President’s Award for Excellence presented by Providence Health System. The award was presented on April 25 to the multidisciplinary team for its success in significantly improving ventilator management, specifically for decreasing the rate of ventilator-associated pneumonias. Eighteen nominations were submitted for consideration and covered a wide range of quality and clinical improvements in patient care, customer service, and financial stewardship. The team at Providence Alaska: Dr. Peter Riley, Dr. John Clark, Jackie Mossakowski, Margaret Auble, Rose Timmerman, Vicki Faciane, Steve Mayer, Grant Jones, and Linda Pease worked together to adopt evidence-based standards and introduce team rounds for overall improved standards for their patients on ventilators. Among the results were significant reductions in the number of hours patients were on ventilators, their length of stay in the medical center, and the cost of their care. Most significant, the rate for ventilator-associated pneumonia dropped from 2.0 to a national best performing rate of 0.4. Two other Providence facilities also received 2005 President’s Awards, including Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, CA, and Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, WA.
