Residents of the Providence Extended Care Center (PECC) have seen the daily pain they experience reduced by a remarkable degree over the last few years — from 15 percent in 2004 to only three percent today. Transformational Grand Rounds, a prestigious series of health care webcasts, recently recognized PECC’s accomplishments by inviting staff to showcase their success to a national audience of industry insiders.
Making pain management a priority, PECC staff used a comprehensive, resident-centered approach to achieve their success. A multidisciplinary pain team tapped into new perspectives and research on pain care, while new systems were implemented to engage residents and staff in pain recognition and reporting. The staff also examined their own records for clues to pain management successes and failures, and followed up with strategies for individualized care.
The Transformational Grand Rounds webcast took place Aug. 14. During the event, staff members from the 224-bed Anchorage facility highlighted their successes and discussed their methods with approximately 500 medical personnel across the country. The audience included members of the medical quality improvement community, staff from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and interested individuals from a wide range of other health care providers.
The Transformational Grand Rounds series presents these industry insiders with the opportunity to hear success stories in four settings of care: hospitals, nursing homes, physician offices and home health. PECC's achievement placed them among only a handful of providers chosen to present at this series, and only the second nursing home so honored.
"We are very proud of this recognition of our pain management program,” said Karl Garber, the facility's administrator. “The main reason for our success is our staff who championed this initiative and our front-line staff of compassionate and committed people who want to serve those who are in need.”
