"With the generous support of Providence Health and Services, Jewish Family & Child Service has been able to provide services to help isolated immigrant seniors in the Portland metro area. The Integrated Senior Access Project (ISAP) provides support services to immigrant seniors who, due to language and cultural barriers have difficulty accessing ordinary community resources that serve seniors. Many of the seniors we initially interviewed for this project wept as they told our bilingual case managers of their loneliness, declining health and difficulty communicating due to their limited English speaking abilities. Resettled here as refugees from the former Soviet Union, with the help of ISAP and our bilingual staff, these seniors have participated in English classes, social activities and programs that provide education and advocacy to help them with housing, food and health concerns. Receiving help with these basic needs has vastly improved their quality of life. We are truly grateful to Providence for their support of this vital project."
