NEW PROVIDENCE NEWBERG MEDICAL CENTER, OREGON'S NEWEST AND GREENEST - HOSPITAL, DRAWS THOUSANDS FOR OPEN HOUSE
June 10, 2006
NEWBERG, Ore. - When it came time to break ground for the new Providence Newberg Medical Center (PNMC), 2,453 people turned out with shovels to help set a Guinness World Record for such an event. Saturday, another big crowd turned out, as more than 3,000 people came out to see the community's new hospital at PNMC's open house.
Cathy and Mike Blackwell of Dundee, who are expecting their first child, took the opportunity to preview the new birthing suites at PNMC. "This is great - this is beautiful," said Cathy Blackwell. "I love the view outside the room. I think Newberg really needed a new facility like this, and I'm excited to have my baby here."
"This is a fantastic building with a fantastic staff, and it's a great day to show the people in our communities their new hospital," said Larry Bowe, chief executive of Providence Newberg.
U.S. Rep. David Wu and Newberg Mayor Bob Stewart were among those taking part in a special dedication ceremony held during the open house. In his remarks, Rep. Wu spoke of his gratitude "on behalf of the people who will find the health care they need here. I know that Providence has made a special commitment to the poor and vulnerable in our communities, and I appreciate the work they do for all (the people) they serve."
The dedication ceremony began with a torch run from the old Providence Newberg Hospital to the new medical center. Ten Sisters of Providence were also on hand, including Sister Charlotte Van Dyke, who serves as a councilor for Mother Joseph Province. She prayed that the new medical center "would be a place where those in pain find comfort, those in distress find comfort, and where our mission of caring is witnessed every moment of every day."
Providence Newberg is receiving national recognition for its leadership in energy and environmental design. It is the only hospital in the nation using 100 percent renewable wind power, provided by Portland General Electric. In addition, Providence Newberg will be certified by the U.S. Green Building Council, a national organization that encourages and supports construction of healthy, energy efficient buildings.
Some of the environmentally-friendly features of Providence Newberg include:
- 100 percent outdoor air circulating inside the building;
- 100 percent renewable/green power used in the facility;
- 75 percent construction waste recycled and/or salvaged;
- storm water runoff management;
- and green cleaning practices and products used by housekeeping.
The open house kicked off two weeks of special events at PNMC. On Friday, June 1, patients from the old Providence Newberg Hospital will be transferred to the new facility. That will be followed on Saturday, June 24, by a blessing ceremony performed by the Most Rev. John Vlazny, archbishop of Portland.
